NCH Healthcare System Receives Six Million Dollar Gift

NCH HEALTHCARE FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES SIX MILLION DOLLAR GIFT at the 55th ANNUAL HOSPITAL BALL

NCH Hospital Ball 2013NAPLES, FL., October 28, 2013 –The 55th annual NCH Hospital Ball was truly a special evening for the 500 guests in attendance. Robert, Mariann & Megan MacDonald stepped up to make a $6,000,000 contribution to NCH to be applied towards the renovation and enhancement of the Emergency Department. A portion of this overall renovation will include the Pediatric Emergency Department (PED), which is this year’s beneficiary of the Ball proceeds. NCH will name the PED for Robert, Mariann and Megan MacDonald, because of their longtime support of NCH. In 2009, the pediatric department located on the Third Floor of the Baker Tower at the North Naples Hospital, was named the “Robert & Mariann MacDonald SeaCAREium” in recognition of a previous gift. Mariann MacDonald has served as Chairman of the NCH Board of Trustees since 2012.

“We are truly blessed to have Robert, Mariann and Megan MacDonald as supporters of NCH. They are true leaders in our community. There will always be a special place in the hearts of the NCH family for the MacDonalds,” stated Allen Weiss, M.D., President & CEO, NCH Healthcare System. “We are grateful their passion for children and their ongoing generosity continues to enhance quality medical services for the adults as well as the littlest patients in our community.”

Mariann MacDonald explains, “It was an easy decision for our family to make. I am a mother and grandmother first and foremost, but my professional background is in the healthcare industry. This is why we decided to make a meaningful contribution to the NCH Emergency Department expansion.” She adds “We are very excited about the entire project, but feel as though the Pediatric Emergency Department expansion is a tremendous step forward for NCH.”

The NCH Pediatric Emergency Department is a special place designed for newborn infants to children eighteen years of age. These children come from Collier County’s diverse mix of full-time residents, seasonal residents, and visitors. In 2012, North Naples Hospital cared for more than 17,000 pediatric ER patients, a 33% increase over the last five years. Today, this enormous patient volume easily overwhelms what the Pediatric ED was designed to do. Because of the gift from the MacDonald family, as well as other community supporters including First National Bank of the Gulf Coast, NCH will be able to expand from the current seven patient rooms to 14 rooms, including two that are specifically designated as trauma rooms. The enhanced Pediatric ED will create a friendly and calming environment for children and their parents during times of crisis. In order to meet the needs of our youngest patients, plans call for 24 hour care with the most advanced pediatric technology and equipment. The NCH team of specialized pediatric emergency doctors and nurses will be able to treat a broader range of medical issues with the highest level of personalized care.

Michele Thoman, System Chief Nursing Officer and COO, North Naples Hospital, explains, “Every minute counts when dealing with a critical health issue. The children in our community deserve the highest level of treatment along with a broader range of services close to home. Time can sometimes mean the difference between life and death,” Thoman adds.
