Brachy Therapy (IVBT) – Intravascular Brachytherapy (IVBT)
Brachytherapy is an invasive procedure using radiation for in-stent restenosis. In-stent restensis occurs when a coronary stent becomes blocked. At the NCH Healthcare System, we utilize beta radiation. IVBT is a procedure that involves a multidisciplinary approach. The team includes a radiation oncologist, physicist and invasive cardiologist. Usually the blockage inside of the stent is caused by abnormal cells growing at a rapid rate. This radiation treatment destroys these abnormal cells and prevents the regrowth of the blockage in the coronary stent. The process of this procedure is the same as for balloon angioplasty and coronary stinting.
