Interorganizational Task Force - Background Information
Based on lessons learned from the September 11 attacks, the blood community recognized the need to develop a response plan to future domestic disasters and acts of terrorism. The Interorganizational Task Force on Domestic Disasters and Acts of Terrorism was formed in December 2001 to help ensure that - in the event of a national disaster - blood collection efforts run smoothly and are managed properly, with the public receiving clear and consistent messages regarding the status of America's blood supply.
The American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) is serving as the coordinating entity for the task force. Other task force members include: America's Blood Centers (ABC), American Red Cross (ARC), Blood Centers of American (BCA), Armed Services Blood Program Office (ASBPO), Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Food and Drug Association (FDA), and the American Hospital Association (AHA).
Community Blood Center of Naples- Bonita Springs Disaster Response.
The Community Blood Center is a member of AABB and will actively participate in Disaster Response plans coordinated by the Task Force and will follow guidelines that they establish.
Providing Blood to the Military: The military collects its own blood and relies foremost on that blood for its troops. In times of major conflicts they may require backup from civilian sources. The Task Force has set up a "spoke and hub" system of its members (Florida Blood Services in Tampa; Carter BloodCare in Dallas; Blood Systems in Phoenix, BloodSource in Sacramento; Bon Fils Blood Center in Denver; and Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center in Davenport, Iowa). Once the military request blood, six hub centers will immediately ship the requested blood to a designated military location for transport to where it is needed. Other members will "back fill" the hub centers blood supply to protect the hub center's local supply and its ability to respond to further urgent needs for blood.
The Community Blood Center of Naples - Bonita Springs will work with Florida Blood Services in Tampa to assist with the needs of that hub. Blood is needed every day - not just in times of disaster or military action. Donors are urged to come in regularly so inventory remains at optimal levels. Jeanne Dariotes, President of America's Blood Centers said, "Let's make sure blood is on the shelves at all times so we're prepared for anything. It is the blood on the shelf that saves lives."
