The NCH Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

... Was Able to Grow, Because of You!

photo785Just like the tiny babies who thrive there, the NCH Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) was growing by leaps and bounds and needed to undergo a major expansion. Three years ago, there are nine NICU beds. NCH was averaging 12 NICU babies on any given day.  Those numbers translated into a critical community need. The babies, the families, the doctors, the nurses all needed more space...space to grow and thrive!

2016-NICU-Thank-you-JilkBecause of our generous donors, NCH was able to DOUBLE the size of the NICU from nine to 18 beds! Nearly the entire construction and equipment budget of $5 million was funded by charitable gifts.

The Level-two NICU is now able to provide more NICU beds--and sophisticated beds able to offer more specialized services--to care for sick or premature infants and no longer need to send babies to other healthcare facilities, sometimes far away from home, for lack of space. Fortunately, previously made transfers can be avoided as the NICU can care for preemies with a birth weight as low as 2.2 pounds or about 28 weeks gestation. By keeping their care in the community, we are able to minimize disrupting entire families, making it easier for loved ones to be close to those who need them most, the newborns.

Some of the key equipment added to the NICU included 12 warming beds, called Giraffe Omnibeds, as well as Panda units. These specialized units keep fragile infants warm. The renovated unit, with its warm color and soft lighting, provides a more comfortable and inviting space for families to spend time at the bedside, achieving family-centered care that is critical for nurturing the newborn. A family lounge is now available to allow family members and friends to gather, and to provide respite for parents. In addition, breastfeeding is promoted with the addition of breast milk warmers and a 3-bay lactation room and breast milk warmers.
