About Dr. Martinez-Ruiz
Dr. Martinez-Ruiz is a board-certified anesthesiologist and critical care specialist with more than 20 years of experience. After achieving his undergraduate medical education at the Universidad Central de Venezuela, he completed his training in anesthesiology at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard University in Boston, after which he obtained a combined cardiothoracic anesthesia and critical care fellowship. He later served as Chief of Surgical Intensive Care and Cardiac Anesthesia at the Miami VA Hospital. He was also the Cardiac ICU Medical Director at Jackson Memorial Hospital where he oversaw the critical care and cardiothoracic anesthesia fellowships for the University of Miami.
Dr. Martinez-Ruiz has a strong interest in applied physiology, comparative physiology and organ design, pulmonary mechanics and ventilator management, and methods of monitoring tissue oxygenation and perfusion, among others. He has spent significant time training on transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography. Dr. Martinez-Ruiz taught crisis resource management for cardiac and critical care resident, using a multidisciplinary teaching platform and team-based patient management. He was also an instructor in the Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology (MOCA) for the American Board of Anesthesiology.
Dr. Martinez-Ruiz has been married for 33 years and has a son and a daughter. He is an avid cyclist and runner; he also enjoys photography and astronomy.
