Lung Cancer Screening

Early Detection Saves Lives

Lung cancer causes more deaths than colon, breast, and prostate cancers combined.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths, often diagnosed too late for effective treatment. Screening with low-dose CT (LDCT) scans help detect lung cancer early, when it’s most treatable. For high-risk individuals, such as smokers or former smokers, early detection through regular screenings significantly improves survival rates.

What is the NCH Lung Cancer Screening Program?

The program focuses on early detection using a noninvasive, low-dose CT scan (LDCT). It evaluates for nodules, provides counseling to current smokers, and offers resources to help quit smoking. If you’ve already quit, the program helps maintain abstinence.

How Lung Cancer Screening Works

Steps for Screening:

  • Step 1: Initial consultation with a PCP or NCH Pulmonary Provider for counseling and shared decision- making.
  • Step 2: Quick and noninvasive LDCT scan, which takes only 20 seconds while you remain clothed (removing any jewelry).
  • Step 3: Post-scan results will be communicated by the ordering provider and sent to your Primary care provider.

What happens if abnormalities are found?

  • If non-lung abnormalities are found during your CT scan, your provider will discuss these findings with you. Depending on the nature of the abnormalities, additional tests or referrals to other specialist may be recommended to ensure thorough evaluation and proper care.
