Frequently Asked Questions
Got questions about volunteering at NCH? From time commitments to training and roles, we’ve answered the most common questions to help you get started with confidence.
Is there a time commitment for volunteering?
Yes. We ask our volunteers to commit to at least one shift of 4 hours per week for a minimum of one year. This consistency helps us provide reliable support to our patients, families, and staff.
Does it cost anything to volunteer?
No. Volunteering at NCH is completely free. You are only responsible for your own transportation to and from your assigned location.
Do I need any special skills to volunteer?
Not at all. All you need is a desire to help and a compassionate heart. Some roles may have physical requirements, such as standing or walking for extended periods or assisting with wheelchairs. We’ll match you with a role that fits your abilities and interests.
Will I receive training?
Yes. We provide comprehensive training to ensure your safety and the safety of our patients, visitors, and staff. Your supervisor will also guide you through your specific duties so you can serve with confidence.
What paperwork is required to get started?
All applicants must complete a volunteer application and submit the required documentation listed in our Volunteer Services Checklist. This helps us ensure a safe and supportive environment for everyone.
Am I guaranteed a volunteer position once I apply?
While we do our best to place every applicant, some roles may have limited availability. We carefully match volunteers to roles based on interest, availability, and fit. If we can’t place you in your most desired area right away, we will work to ensure you can transition as soon as the opportunity becomes available.
Do I need to come in for an interview?
While in-person interviews are required, there are opportunities to conduct this. Those interviews will be on a case-by-case basis. Please let the scheduler know of your conflicts when they call to schedule the interview.
Can I choose what I do as a volunteer?
We do our best to align your interests with our current needs. While we can’t guarantee specific roles, we’ll work with you to find a meaningful and fulfilling placement.
Will I be providing medical care?
No. Volunteers do not perform clinical tasks. However, you may interact with patients and visitors by offering non-medical support, such as wayfinding, delivering items, or simply offering a friendly presence.
Are there roles that don’t involve patient interaction?
Yes. We offer behind-the-scenes roles for those who prefer to support our mission through administrative tasks or other non-public-facing duties.
Can NCH employees also volunteer?
Yes! NCH employees are welcome to volunteer outside of their regular work hours, in departments unrelated to their job duties. Volunteer service must be offered freely, without expectation of compensation or employment-related benefits.
