Center of Excellence
Complex Hypertension Clinic
Program Overview
Our mission is to integrate the latest advances, latest research, and best-practices in the diagnosis and management of hypertension using a multi-disciplinary approach with a personalized patient care experience.
Conditions We Treat
Hypertension (also known as high blood pressure) is a serious medical condition that is often called the “silent killer” because many people with hypertension have few or no symptoms until they develop a cardiovascular event. Hypertension is the leading cause of heart disease, stroke, and kidney failure. Nearly half of US adults have hypertension (~119 million people) but only 1 out of 4 affected individuals have their blood pressure under adequate control.
- Diagnosis of white coat hypertension and nocturnal hypertension
- Treatment of uncontrolled and resistant hypertension
- Diagnosis and treatment of secondary hypertension
- Diagnosis and treatment of labile blood pressure and orthostatic hypotension
Testing & Diagnostics
Our multidisciplinary team includes physicians from Cardiology, Nephrology, Sleep Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Interventional Radiology. The team has close clinical ties to other specialties such as Endocrine and Endocrine Surgery and more.
Evaluations often include 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring and remote home monitoring to measure blood pressure readings over time. These, along with other tests, help determine the source of the problem. For example, an undiagnosed medical condition such as sleep apnea or a hormonal disorder may be contributing to the rise in blood pressure.
Treatments & Procedures
Our team of dedicated clinicians at the Comprehensive Hypertension Clinic offer a range of personalized treatments to safely and effectively lower blood pressure, including:
- Lifestyle modification: dietary assessments and interventions, and exercise programs
- Medication and supplement management: designed to reduce the risk of harmful interactions between prescription and non-prescription drugs on your blood pressure
- Renal artery stenting: the clinic uses state-of-the-art imaging techniques and other diagnostic tools to determine if a patient may benefit from renal artery stenting, a specialized procedure to open blocked renal arteries and restore blood flow, and thereby reduce blood pressure
- Wellness interventions: stress management, mindfulness, and sleep hygiene
- New Treatment Option: The Comprehensive Hypertension Clinic offers a minimally invasive procedure called renal denervation that reduces overactive nerves connected to the kidneys that may contribute to high blood pressure.
Dr. Mazen Albaghdadi is a Harvard-trained interventional cardiologist and vascular medicine expert with expertise in minimally invasive procedures and hypertension management. The FDA recently approved renal denervation as safe and effective in helping select patients control their blood pressure. We are continuing to examine the long-term impact of renal denervation over time.
Patients with resistant hypertension or who are intolerant to medications may be candidates for renal denervation.
