We’ve all had a doctor, nurse, hospital staffer or volunteer who went above and beyond to provide care and comfort to us. NCH is proud to offer our Guardian Angel program, a giving initiative for patients and families to honor those individuals. Each gift recognizes the compassion and dedication of our caregivers while supporting programs that enhance care for future patients.

Community member George Cingle recently honored the entire team in the downtown fourth-floor south oncology unit after they took care of his wife, Pat, during four stays while she was dealing with terminal cancer. George says the team helped alleviate Pat’s fears and “extended her life through a novel endoscopic procedure and constant loving care.” He adds the entire team “showed the utmost compassion” and “provided the most important thing every cancer patient needs – continual encouragement to maintain a positive attitude so we could strongly face another day of extreme adversity.”
George had an emotional reunion with the caregivers this month to deeply thank them for their extraordinary care efforts during Pat’s final time at the hospital. He highlighted Dawn Biery Sperber, the Cingles’ nurse navigator in palliative care, and also included everyone in 4S – from the nurses and techs to housekeeping and even a plumber who fixed an issue in her room. The team members also received Guardian Angel certificates and lapel pins to recognize their compassion.
