Legacy Is a Continuum

When Pat Scoville talks about giving, she rarely talks about dollars. Instead, she talks about people.

She talks about children receiving the care they need. Families finding comfort close to home. Prevention, healing, recovery, and what she calls the continuum of care.

To Pat, healthcare and philanthropy share something in common. Neither is defined by a single moment. Both create lasting impact, one life at a time.

“It’s not a one-shot thing,” Pat says. “Legacy, to me, is a continuum of help and services that you’re providing. It’s not just building something and saying, ‘There, I’m done.’ It’s about how what you do today will impact the community down the road.”

That philosophy has guided Pat’s philanthropy for years.

Leaving More Than a Name

Raised in a small Massachusetts town, Pat built a successful career in human resources and corporate training before retiring to Naples with her late husband, Homer. Together, they found more than a place to call home. They found a community they wanted to invest in.

“Homer enjoyed giving money away to good organizations,” Pat says with a smile. “We were very fortunate to be able to do that, and I adopted many of his philosophies.”

She sees philanthropy as a way to strengthen her community by investing in causes that improve lives, especially children and healthcare.

After participating in a Greater Naples Leadership tour of NCH, Pat gained a deeper appreciation for the hospital’s role in caring for the community. When she shared that experience with Homer, they recognized an opportunity to invest in the future of healthcare close to home. That conversation marked the beginning of a relationship with NCH that would grow into a lasting philanthropic partnership.

Together, they supported initiatives across the healthcare journey, from prevention and wellness at the Briggs Wellness Center to emergency care when patients need it most. Through both lifetime giving and a future estate commitment, the Scovilles are helping ensure that exceptional care will continue for generations to come.

That shared philosophy deepened Pat’s appreciation for what makes NCH unique: its commitment to caring for patients through every stage of their healthcare journey.

A Continuum of Care

Pat often describes health and healing as a continuum. “From prevention to wellness, medical care, and recovery, it all works together,” she says.

As Naples continues to grow, she believes access to exceptional healthcare close to home is more important than ever.

“People need medical services nearby,” she says. “If you can receive care close to home, you’re going to recover faster, and hopefully prevent bigger problems down the road.”

The Future, Close to Home

For Pat, the future of healthcare is reflected in every patient, every family, and every generation that will benefit from it.

After touring NCH’s expanding women’s and children’s services, Pat left inspired by the future of care close to home for mothers, babies, and families across Southwest Florida.

“Premature babies can stay close to their mothers instead of being transported hours away. That means everything.”

Having witnessed the difference compassionate care can make during life’s earliest challenges, Pat understands what exceptional healthcare means to families.

“Even if life starts with challenges, wonderful care can make all the difference,” she says.

Each new facility reinforces Pat’s confidence in NCH’s future.

“I’ve toured every new facility that’s opened,” she says. “Every time, I’m impressed. The physicians, the nurses, the technology, the training. Without philanthropy, you’d never be able to provide physicians with the tools and resources they need.”

The Ripple Effect

Pat has also seen how generosity has a way of inspiring generosity.

After a friend noticed the Scoville family name inside the hospital and later chose to become an NCH supporter herself, Pat realized that one act of giving can encourage another.

“If it’s even one person,” she says, “that’s worth it.”

Today, that ripple effect extends to her family, who frequently visit, and the community she has helped strengthen. Knowing future generations will have access to exceptional healthcare reinforces why giving remains so important to her.

“My hope,” she says, “is that we’ve had a positive impact. On our family. On the organizations we’ve supported. On the community.”

For Pat Scoville, legacy isn’t something you leave behind. It’s a continuum you help build. One person. One family. One generation at a time.
