NCH is transforming lung cancer detection with a new robotic bronchoscopy system called the Ion, capable of reaching deep into the lungs where traditional tools could not. For patients like Sheila Wade—who lost her sister to lung cancer and is now facing her own slow‑growing diagnosis—this technology offers hope. The Ion works alongside a CT scan to precisely navigate tiny airways, allowing doctors to biopsy even the smallest nodules without puncturing the lung or chest. According to NCH specialists, this advancement is helping catch more cancers at stage one, when treatment is highly effective and five‑year survival rates can reach around 90%. Wade required only five rounds of radiation and is grateful for the early detection. As accuracy improves, this robotic system is expected to become the new gold standard for diagnosing lung cancer.
