Pickleball’s growing popularity is also leading to a surge in injuries, with emergency room visits increasing nearly 20-fold over the past decade. While the sport is often considered a safer, joint-friendly alternative to tennis, physical therapist Bill Confer of HSS at NCH says players who are not regularly active may be at greater risk of injury when they start playing without proper conditioning.
Confer recommends warming up before playing and focusing on balance and strength, particularly in the calves, quads, and glutes. He also emphasizes the importance of allowing injuries to rest and recover, as repetitive strain and untreated injuries can lead to more chronic problems.
