NCH General Surgery Performs South Florida’s First Single-Port Transabdominal Colectomy Procedure

Naples, FL., December 12, 2025 – Naples Comprehensive Health (NCH) announced that its General Surgery team has successfully performed the first single-port (SP) transabdominal colectomy surgery in South Florida, marking a significant milestone in minimally invasive surgical care for the region. The complex procedure was performed by Robert Grossman, MD, a fellowship-trained robotic surgeon at NCH.

The SP approach is an advanced robotic technique in which surgeons operate through a single small incision, typically at or near the navel, using a robotic system designed to articulate instruments through one access point. This method reduces trauma to surrounding tissue, may minimize pain, and can lead to shorter recovery times.

Currently it is approved for colorectal surgery, urology, and select ENT applications, however in the future, it will be available for a wider variety of cases. Because of the precision required and the specialized training needed to operate the single-port platform, only a limited number of centers offer this capability.

“This is a major step forward for our surgical program and for patients in Southwest Florida,” said Robert Grossman, MD, Surgeon at NCH. “SP technology allows us to perform highly complex operations through one incision while maintaining the dexterity and visualization of a full robotic system. Bringing this level of innovation to NCH means our patients can stay close to home while receiving some of the most sophisticated minimally invasive care available.”

The procedure reflects NCH’s continued investment in next-generation technology and its commitment to expanding access to advanced, patient-centered care as part of the health system’s long-term strategic vision to elevate specialized care in the region. The single-port transabdominal procedure reinforces NCH’s dedication to offering world-class capabilities with the goal of ensuring that our community will not have to travel to major metropolitan academic centers for cutting-edge surgery.
