According to the Centers for Disease Control, COVID-19 and the seasonal flu are similar in many ways. Both are respiratory diseases that spread through fluid from the mouth and nose of an infected individual. In addition, both are contagious, produce similar symptoms and should be taken very seriously.
However, there are some differences. While both produce fever, cough and muscle aches—and are particularly difficult on the elderly, they come from two different viruses. Ask a health professional and they’ll tell you that most people have more protection from the flu because there is a vaccine, and we are exposed to the flu virus every year, and have been for quite some time.
But it is still difficult for many people to distinguish between the diseases. Allow us to breakdown the two and provide more understanding on recognizing the cause, symptoms, transmission and cure for both.
If you are ever in doubt when trying to self-diagnose or detect symptoms of either the flu or COVID-19 in someone you know, contact NCH Healthcare System or your provider. Use the CDC website to gain further understanding and to educate yourself and others on the two diseases. You should learn where to find local information and cases of COVID-19.
It is essential to know the signs and symptoms of COVID-19 and stay home and limit contact with others when you suspect you might have been in contact with the disease. A pandemic is a stressful time but being prepared and knowledgeable goes a long way in containing and slowing the spread of the virus.
